Reference “wingnuts”: When I was in the Navy 1965-69, a “wingnut” was a derogatory term for a person with unusually large ears. Again, a reference to the hardware item.
Now I’m giving away my age.

Reference “hat tip”: From about 1950 to 1963 (when the creator died) there was a cartoon strip called “They’ll Do It Every Time” by James “Jimmy” Hatlo (q.v.)
At the top of each strip was one of his characters literally doffing his hat (which EVERYONE wore in those days) and the words, “A tip of the Hatlo hat to. . .” whatever reader had submitted the suggestion or inspiration for that day’s strip.
These “hat tips” were occasionally sarcastic, as I recall.
Very much like the LGF tradition.
Now I’m REALLY giving away my age!

I coined L³, but since I was banned, 4 months after I left, I can’t search the link.

I don’t believe I coined any terms or provided documentation for any terms. That plus being banned amkes me think it might be best if my nic were deleated from the “hat tips” section.

Just a note: When you update please take a moment afterwards to hit Pingomatic fill out the form appropriately for the dictionary page, not this page, and click the “send pings” button. If we don’t continually do that they blog will float to the top of the search engines and this will not.
I am fixing the autoping feature as well so the appropriate pings are sent for the dictionary page.

Thanos | September 17, 2007 at 11:59 am
Ok, I take it back. The interface here at wordpress.com won’t allow you to set another page besides the blog as the site to ping to search engines, so please continue to ping at pingomatic whenever you’ve finished an update.

Can you give me a genera idea when you coined it. The LGF search engine only allows a three month envelope nowadays.

It was years ago, back when 100 posts was a big thread. Back when caton still posted.

As of now the first use is credited to Scaramouche. I will look into to it now. If you had first mention I will change the definition and give you the credit as coiner of the phrase.

OK, folks, I have now updated the OLD dictionary hosted at zombietime to now feature this verbiage in big bold letters at the top of the page:
THE LGF DICTIONARY HAS MOVED! PLEASE CLICK HERE TO VISIT US AT OUR NEW LOCATION:
The Little Green Footballs Dictionary
(The original dictionary, found below, will remain online as a “legacy site”; however, please note that the dictionary found on this page is out-of-date and does not contain the latest definitions and entries.)

s&d and Reaganite:
Currently, the “first usage” of L3 is by Geepers on 12/16/03:
http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/?entry=9337#c0025
Can we find an earlier reference than that?

I’m looking right now.

I sent you an email over a year ago with the link from my old email.
hawkrcr@earthlink.net.
You told me then I indeed did have the earliest usage. I even showed you where Caton asked “is that the new LLL”?

Zombie,
There are several comments that people made at the LGF posting that have not come over here. I can summarize them and post them here if that would be convenient. Thus, we could vote on them, do the research, etc.
Your call; your best bet is to email me, though, as I’m going back to work tomorrow.

#16 reaganite:
Dang, I can’t find that email any more. Sorry! If you can find it and re-send it — or get someone to dig out the link again — that would be great. Maybe s&d can find it. The search function doesn’t seem to work right for me most of the time.
The whole reason I “wiki-ized” the dictionary and started this new version is that I had piles of updates that people had emailed me, but no time to implement any of them. Yours was one of hundreds. Hopefully, now with the new system, all the updates, including yours, will finally be inputted.
Let’s hope!

17. vxbush: no need at the moment: we can just consider that LGF thread as a “mother lode” to be mined over time.

Like you the search utility at LGF doesn’t work like it used to. I did find when reaganite and Caton started posting and perused the posts but didn’t find the refernence to LLL. I did a search of the term LLL, which reaganite said Caton used, “so is that the new LLL” but came up with nothing. I’m moving on the the tasks of mine left undone so far.

reaganite | September 19, 2007 at 3:04 pm
To find it, you actually have to search by cutting and pasting “L³”

OK I’ll give it another shot. Caton started posting in January 2003. I’ll start there.

zombie and s&d - y’all can go ahead and search, but if reaganite says he “invented” it I think you can take him at his word.

The Poster Formerly Known as Gordon | October 18, 2007 at 3:15 pm
Please update the “Nodrog” section to indicate that “Gordon” was spuriously banned by Charles in early October 2007 for allegedly making an anti-semitic post, which consisted of a word-play on the phrase “taken as Gospel.” Charles’ real reasons for banning Gordon are unknown at this time.
Also note that “the poster formerly known as Gordon” has a new weblog, entitled “Nodrog’s Greatest Hits,” found at nodrogsgreatesthits.blogspot.com, which, when finished will constitute an authoritative unauthorized biography of LGF from April 2003 through September 2007.

the poster formerly known as gordon | January 24, 2008 at 10:42 am
The first use of the term “Nodrog” on LGF was on March 11, 2004, in a thread entitled “UN Rushes to Blame ETA.” The user was Green Mamba in comment #57. For more info, see this: http://nodrogsgreatesthits.blogspot.com/2008/01/first-nodrog-siting.html

Nodrog’s Greatest Hits ( http://www.nodrogsgreatesthits.blogspot.com ) is now up to 314 entries! We’re well into 2006, close to our inglorious ending date of October 2007, when Charles decided that the Nodrog’s takedowns of him and other posters on LGF were no longer to be tolerated.
Come over, view the carnage, and enjoy!
