I nominate: DinnerJacket

July 18, 2007

I’d like to request we add the word “DinnerJacket” to the dictionary and note its reference to Ahmedinejad, president of Iran (proper spelling to be confirmed). It’s different enough that people may not get the reference. It would definitely be interesting to find the first usage on the blog and see if anyone on the net in general uses that term.

I actually used “rogered” on a thread I posted over at Powerline Friday night.

  • 2. zombie  |  July 18, 2007 at 6:29 pm

    18. songanddanceman:

“Rogered” dates back at least to WWII, when American troops picked it up from British troops. To “roger” in Brit slang was basically the same thing as to “fuck” in US slang, in both senses of the term: to have sex with, and the ruin/screw up.

So, for example, if you found yourself in a bad situation, you’d say, “We’re rogered!” Or if someone broke your car, you say, “You rogered the engine!” And of course, you can guess the meaning of, “I gave her a good rogering.”

I think the whole thing of a poster named “Roger” actually screwing up a thread was just an amazing linguistic coincidence, as Roger really did “roger the thread.” I think people started using that phrase on LGF because it was so perfect and appropriate. But it did not start on LGF — I’ve seen the term many times in British books and film from decades ago.

You could do a dictionary entry on it, but it would have to note that it was not specifically an LGF-derived term, though it did have a peculiar LGF relevance. Not sure what everyone else woiuld think, though.

What the hell is going on? Why are half the comments in reverse chronological order?

    Did somebody mess with something?

    Now I look a fool.

  • 4. Noam Sayin  |  July 18, 2007 at 6:37 pm

Another wierod thing is happening too, zombie. When we post something new, it’s added to the top of the list. My most recent post came after songanddanceman’s, but it’s currently listed as #1.

  • 5. zombie  |  July 18, 2007 at 6:37 pm

Ahhhhhhh, it just dawned on me:

The timezone was changed, so the recent comments now “precede” the older comments.

    Craziness.

    Carry on.

I don’t think the text is too small.

And ‘dinnerjacket’ is an excellent entry!

  • 7. song_and_dance_man  |  July 18, 2007 at 6:41 pm

    3 zombie

I just noticed that and entered a post twice because I didn’t see it appear at the bottom. OK let’s not change this while tinkering.

  • 8. song_and_dance_man  |  July 18, 2007 at 6:46 pm

Your right zombie, I googled the term and found ‘rogered’ elsewhere and in spite of the coincidence that Roger rogered a thread it is not enough for submission.

  • 9. ChenZhen  |  July 18, 2007 at 6:48 pm

How the heck did my comment show up on #6?

  • 10. DesertSage  |  July 18, 2007 at 6:49 pm

I think this thread is rogered, somethings wrong with the numbering.

    What did you do Noam?

  • 11. song_and_dance_man  |  July 18, 2007 at 6:51 pm

    Chen

    See zombie’s #5

Next question: Does anybody know how we can change the settings on this %#$&@#$ blog so that the name of the admin who posted each thread is visible? (I.e. “posted by xxx”). Crazily, it doesn’t do that with the current settings.

That is theme-based. My suggestion would be to have the poster sign the post, like this:

I didn’t touch a thing, Sage. I was just standing here minding my own business.

… and flipping this lever up and down.

  • 14. DesertSage  |  July 18, 2007 at 7:12 pm

This should be comment #33, let’s see where it ends up.

  • 16. zombie  |  July 18, 2007 at 10:55 pm

    I vote “Yes” on DinnerJacket.

Also: i think the overall blog font is too small and slightly too pale. How can we increase the point size and/or darken it a little?

And: make the link-font-color darker too.

  • 17. DesertSage  |  July 18, 2007 at 11:27 pm

    I vote “yes” on DinnerJacket.

  • 18. Killgore Trout  |  July 18, 2007 at 11:37 pm

    yes to Dinnerjacket.

I think that stuff is here: http://lgfdictionary.wordpress.com/wp-admin/themes.php?page=editcss

    Tweak it.

    Zombie,
If you view the source code for the LGF dictionary you’ll notice near the top is the style sheet. My HTML stinks and I have no idea what CSS is but it’s easy to recognize things like colors and font size. Change the settings and then just just cut’n'paste it into CSS Stylesheet Editor I linked to above. With a little trial and error it should work just fine.

  • 21. Noam Sayin  |  July 19, 2007 at 12:02 am

I was going to put up a temporary road block on DinnerJacket and ask if it was LGF Dictionary-worthy, but a cursory glance through the dictionary tells me it’s a go.

    Arafish
    JfinK
    Fiskie, etc.

    I vote yes.

And I think my avatar works now, too.

  • 22. zombie  |  July 19, 2007 at 12:13 am

OK, vxbush, that’s five “yes’es for DinnerJacket, and no “No”s so far: looks like you’ve got approval to add it, as you already have a majority.

    Take the plunge!

  • 23. zombie  |  July 19, 2007 at 12:17 am

    4.+ 5. Killgore Trout

I must not be seeing what you’re seeing. When I go to that “Edit CSS” page, all I see in the editing field is a long note from WordPress about how to edit CSS. But I don’t see any of the code.

And despite their long note, it’s still not clear what to do.

Where and/or how can I see the CSS code?

  • 24. zombie  |  July 19, 2007 at 12:23 am

    Killgore:

Also, on that CSS page, it says that we can only “preview” the CSS changes, and fiddle with them for fun, but we can’t actually save them and have them permanent unless we fork over $15/year for the “Custom CSS Upgrade.”

Isn’t there a way to change the font size without doing that?

  • 25. Killgore Trout  |  July 19, 2007 at 12:28 am

    Zombie,
Damn you’re right, you have to pay WordPress to edit the style sheet.
If you’re still curious, you can right click anywhere on this thread, choose “View page source” and you can then see the code for the LGF dictionary. The style sheet is near the top of the code.

  • 26. Killgore Trout  |  July 19, 2007 at 12:31 am

Shit, sorry zombie. I was trying to preview some other themes to see if they work any better. I’ll change it back.

  • 27. zombie  |  July 19, 2007 at 12:40 am

    11. Killgore Trout

Yeah, like I said in one of the first posts: be very careful with the theme editor thingy, because It changes the entire blog in an instant, and there is no way to “preview” it or see what it looks like as a tryout.

What I did was create a “test blog” and tried out every single theme already, after which I deleted the “test blog.”

The result was that I liked this theme (”Blix” ;) the best, by far.

Or at least I thought I did until I just realized the default font size is too small!

On this page they say how to change the font size on individual pages:

How to change font sizes on a page-by-page basis, but not as a default for each new post.

    Looks like our options are:

    a. Laboriously change the font for each post by hand each time.
    b. Fork over $15 to edit the CSS
    c. Change themes to something uglier.
    d. Live with things as they are.

  • 28. Killgore Trout  |  July 19, 2007 at 12:44 am

I did some tinkering and as far as I can tell there’s no way to change the font size or colors.

  • 29. Killgore Trout  |  July 19, 2007 at 12:48 am

    12. Z,
I think option “a” would be just fine. We could just agree on font size/color and create a template that could be pasted in. A few extra mouse clicks.

  • 30. vxbush  |  July 19, 2007 at 12:57 am

Woo hoo! I feel so….powerful. I don’t think I’ll get to add it tonight, but I think I found the first usage on LGF. Looks like it oringinated there.

  • 31. vxbush  |  July 19, 2007 at 12:58 am

Heh….oringinated? Are we sure we want me editing?

    [blush]

  • 32. Killgore Trout  |  July 19, 2007 at 1:07 am

what was the earliest you found? I searched google and the earliest I can find is Date: 26 Aug 2006…
    http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Uk/uk.politics.misc/2006-08/msg04220.html

I also checked variations :Imadinnerjacket and ahmeddinnerjacket.

  • 33. songanddanceman  |  July 19, 2007 at 1:55 am

    Yes on dinnerjacket

LGF’s search engine left me ‘done’ with no results when looking for a new term I would like to submit.

    rogered

There was a thread where Roger entered a link that left the thread wide as his link and after that instance the term ’someone rogered the thread’ has been used many times since. I guess I will have to google it.

Just testing to see if my nic has been parsed

  • 35. zombie  |  July 19, 2007 at 6:29 am

In case anyone’s mystified as to what happened to DesertSage’s thread asking why the comments were out of order chronologically — and which thread itself ended up being out of order chronologically:

    I deleted it.

Why? First of all, because the thread was about a now-fixed issue and was no longer meanignful and relelvant; and also because it was there right in the middle of some crucial threads about how to post on the blog.

Anyway, it was just an unneeded interloper in the chronology of the posts, and everything is back to normal now, in our new time zone.

  • 36. vxbush  |  July 19, 2007 at 6:46 pm

Okay, a followup: I’ve noted the first usage on LGF in its longer form and its longer form. If it’s okay with Zombie, I’ll link the shorter form (DinnerJacket) and say, “See Ahm-a-DinnerJacket”. There’s some evidence that it didn’t originate on LGF, but it could easily have originated independently. A claim has been made on a page that it started with Stephanie Miller, but I can’t prove that she did or that she did before the notation on LGF.

It was used first on another blog, and I have that reference.

  • 37. vxbush  |  July 19, 2007 at 6:49 pm

    Oh, kilgore: relevant links are:

    first ever located:
    http://hurryupharry.bloghouse.net/archives/2005/12/22/islamists_versus_easy_listening.php
    (December 22, 2005)

    First on LGF:
    Where: http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/?entry=18739#c0028
    (January 1, 2006 as Ahm-A-DinnerJacket)

Reference to Stephanie Miller supposedly using it first:
    http://www.sadlyno.com/archives/4631.html by dalton periphery
but cannot prove. This was noted on December 22, 2006, almost a year after the first usages.

I also have the first used as just DinnerJacket on LGF.

    Okay, bedtime….*yawn*
